The sight of the older gray stallion flooded a memory back into Anika's mind. Slowly she unfolded that dark night she and her brother were kept inside the Fortress near the fire while a blizzard swept past the windows. It seemed so long ago. He'd been around the Fortress since then, but she'd always been ushered elsewhere before she had a chance to greet him. So she watched from afar.
Anika liked his warm smile and soft voice. He'd been kind. He was fuzzy and soft. That was months ago, when it was still so cold outside, and getting to see him now- when the sun was warm and the smell of flowers drifted to her nose- made her giddy.

She grabbed a flower crown in her teeth and bucked her way over to the old stallion. It took a few tries to get it on his head right, with both his ears inside, but he helped her nudge it on correctly. She spat spitty petals on the ground- crumpled where she'd clamped down too hard- and hoped he wouldn't notice

She grinned widely, dumbly. His gray coat was livened up with the pinks and blues of the crown. He looked beautiful.

Not confident in her voice yet, she squealed again and snuggled her head into his chest.

Anika loves Uncle Marshal. Loves him.

This is her first Flower Festival and she is so happy to be out of that dark Fortress after so many months of winter. I mean, how lame is Hira is for keeping her offspring safe from the natural elements of an Onean winter.
